How to make your website sell more

When most people talk about website marketing they focus on getting more traffic or higher search engine rankings. My feeling is that you should increase your website’s conversion before focusing on traffic. That way your results will be dramatically improved when traffic is created.

Unfortunately many business owners think it’s all about traffic on the internet. But we can’t blame them… there are experts at every corner promising you more website visitors and riches beyond your wildest dreams. But they don’t tell you that traffic is a waste of time if your website can’t sell.

Your website’s number one job

My philosophy of website marketing is building a relationship with visitors when they arrive at your website. A big part of this is how you present your business through your website. But more importantly you need to start building a relationship by collecting their contact details.

It’s generally accepted only 1-2% of people will buy when they visit your website. But by taking the time to create a relationship with them that figure will be a lot better. You can compare it to the one-hit wonder band versus the band who makes consistently great albums.

Escaping the social media madness

The danger is with all the social media buzz that we lose sight of our aim. Sure we have some great new tools for communicating with people around the world… and some useless ones as well. But it’s really all about building a relationship.

It doesn’t matter if you build the relationship over email, Twitter, Facebook or YouTube… or through mail, fax or phone. It’s a matter of the value you provide the relationship no matter what media you use. In my opinion you should be using a wide variety of these media to connect with your prospects and clients.

Remember what your objective really is

There is no absolute answer… there is no great and powerful social media website that you can rely on for business. That’s like having a store but not getting a phone. Most business owners are aware that a phone can be very useful and the same is true for social media.

So my message for you is to focus on the relationship you’re building with your website visitors no matter what media you’re using. By creating a valuable relationship your sales will rise almost without effort. Because people prefer to purchase from those they know and trust.

Your action plan

Take a look at your website and decide whether you’re building a relationship or just simply stating what you do. Are you providing valuable information? Are you collecting contact details to send this information with?

Building a relationship isn’t really difficult… all you have to do is imagine the person is standing in front of you. The results can be amazing.

Because at the end of the day it’s all about standing out from the crowd.
